Five short hikes in Lofoten

Five short hikes in Lofoten

It's exciting to go hiking in Lofoten. In fact, we believe it's so exciting that it's what we try to spend most of our time on. But! Hiking in the mountains takes time. And one probably wants to experience as much as possible when in Lofoten, right? Therefore, we've made a list of five relatively short mountain hikes in Lofoten Islands. But, that doesn't mean they are easy or that you should stroll up in sandals. These hikes are still demanding and require fitness. Remember to have good equipment, and stay on the trails. Don't get too close to cliffs for a photo. And remember that everyone is different: consider your own fitness and health before embarking on a hike.

1. Reinebringen

Starting in Reine.

484 m.s.l.

Approx 1-2 hours one way.

Season: Summer

Reinebringen is a beloved classic among adventurers, and maybe one of the best short hikes in Lofoten. Situated near Reine, one of the most picturesque small towns in Lofoten, this mountain offers a breathtaking ascent. The hike consists of 1,974 steps, with several benches along the way for rest stops. At the summit, you'll be rewarded with stunning views of the sea and surrounding mountains.

Note: Reinebringen witnesses numerous accidents every year, often due to slippery conditions. It's safest to hike during the summer months and to avoid trekking in rainy or windy weather. Remember to wear sturdy footwear and keep a safe distance from the edges.

For the latest updates on trail conditions, it's advisable to visit the mountain's Facebook page or contact local tourist information centers in case of trail closures.

2. Hoven

Starting at Lofoten Links.

367 m.s.l.

Approx 1-2 hours one way.

Hiking to Hoven's peak is a must when you're in Lofoten. It's not a very demanding trail, and you have a beautiful view of Gimsøya and the sea all the way. At the top, there's plenty of space, so this hike is also suitable for those who are a little afraid of heights. But we'll say it again, don't get too close to the edge. There are steep cliffs on Hoven as well. We recommend doing the hike in the evening or at night if it's sunny (summer season). Then you can see the midnight sun hanging low over the sea, especially in June and July.

To begin the hike to Hoven in Lofoten, you can park your car at the designated parking area near Lofoten Links. From there, the trailhead is easily accessible, marked by clear signage indicating the start of the hike.

3. Delpsheia

Starting at Laukvika/Delp.

374 m.s.l.

Approx 1-2 hours one way.

Delpen, or Delpsheia, is a fantastic hike on the northeast side of Lofoten. You start by hiking steeply uphill through a forest. Along the way, there are several nice spots to stop where you can see views of the sea. This is also where the sheep usually take a break.

After 30-40 sweaty minutes in steep terrain, the reward awaits! It flattens out at the top, offering fantastic views in several directions. From here, you can look down at the turquoise, clear water or towards massive mountains. In clear weather, Delpsheia is a perfect spot to enjoy the midnight sun during the summer months.

Bonus: If you're really feeling it, you can continue the trail to Matmora, another beautiful mountain. This is a longer trip, so be sure that you have enough clothes, food and energy before you go ahead.

4. Glomtind

Starting at parking close to E10.

419 m.s.l.

Approx 1-2 hours one way.

Glomtind is a beautiful peak on Austvågøy in Lofoten, between Kabelvåg and Henningsvær. The hike is not very demanding, but it gets a bit steep towards the end. There are no particularly scary sections as long as you stay away from the edge. From the top, you have a fantastic view of both Vågakallen and towards Svolvær. You can take two different routes up, either from one side or the other of the tunnel near Henningsvær.

Glomtind may not be so well-known, but it's definitely one of the best short hikes in Lofoten. With easy access from both Svolvær and Henningsvær, this is an excellent choice.

5. Offerøyskammen

Starting close to Offerøystraumen.

436 m.s.l.

Approx 1 hour one way.

Offersøykammen is a popular and relatively easy hiking destination in Lofoten. The mountain is not very high, but you still get a fantastic view. From here, you can see white beaches and steep mountains. And if you come here in the evening and the weather is nice, you will get to experience the midnight sun during the summer months.

Remember that there are very steep cliffs here, so don't go near the edge.
